Roommate Rants Vol. 1

Long time no blog, so here we go!

Previously I had talked about how borderline retarded my landlord is, but in the past few weeks she's actually dialed down the stupidity quite a bit. One of my roommates, has since dialed up her retardedness to epic levels. It's an all out blitzkrieg of idiocy. Sit back, strap in, and get ready for this shit...

Nearly everyday, EVERYDAY this freak yells/complains/bitches about something. We got into a spat a few months ago because I would open the windows at night during the summer because it was hot as balls. Keep in mind, we live in an extremely safe neighborhood AND said window is on the second floor. I'm pretty sure she got pist because I stood up to her and didn't take her shit. Fast forward to the present. It's getting to be the cold/rainy season and this freak loves to leave the windows open at night and during the day she leaves the door wide open. What the freak?

She is supposedly a culinary student. In the time that she has lived here; she has broken a microwave by putting metal in it, had our toaster oven confiscated because she left it on the highest setting unattended for about an hour, and lastly she put PLASTIC in the oven and was surprised when it melted!!!!! And she made the most piss poor attempt to clean up said mess; in the end my landlord and I had to do it. To which she never thanked us. In addition to that she has to be the worst person in her program, because she leaves food out, unattended, and uncovered for days. She also has zero concept of how to clean up or have a tidy kitchen. Currently she spilt enough flour on the floor to make it look like Tony Montana is gonna show up and snort it.

My favorite is just how god damn disgusting she is. She farts and I can hear it through my wall. How gross is that? Through a wall. Again A WALL!!!!! I kid you not, I'm the only one who cleans up around this joint; so one day I cleaned the bathroom since it was super gross, what did she do? She pissed on the toilet seat? A) who does that? B) how does a girl do that? In addition to that she burps like a man.

I'm pretty sure that she only showers one or two times a week, but to make up for it she takes 2 hour long showers. Sadly I know that she's not just showering in there. How is that you ask? Well, one night I went for a run, came back to take a shower and found the shower on the most intense pulse setting....yeah gross. Oh and to add to that I've heard her watching porn a few times.

And to wrap this little rant up, let me say this. She has no job and was kicked out/had to/ forced to leave her culinary program, so she currently has no job and almost never leaves the house. Which sucks because she feels threatened whenever anyone else tries to use the kitchen. My favorite weird thing though is how much she talks to her cats. Now everyone talks to their pets in some context but this lunatic takes it to new levels of craziness. Today I heard her ask one of her cats what day it was and she proceeded to get pissy when the cat didn't answer her question.

Before I leave and recede into the vastness of the internet here is an actual dialog I heard from her when she didn't think anyone was home. Here's the cast of characters in this little play: Simone (batshit crazy roommate), Anubis (her cat and the sane one in this little skit)

Simone: ...are you gonna come in?
Anubis:......
Simone: Are you gonna come? I'm going to the bathroom. Anubis are you coming in?
Anubis:......
Simone: Well make up your mind, I'm going to the bathroom. Okay you stay here.
Anubis:......

3 minutes later she emerges from the bathroom and loudly proclaims the following...

(bathroom door opens)
Simone: WWWHHHEEEWWW!!!! Stinky turds.

Something to Ponder

I've been going through a phase where I'm currently listening to a lot of Slayer amongst other artists and genres, and it got me thinking about a few things; 1) I am super glad/lucky I got to see them with the original 4 guys twice inside of a year 2) Slayer should not play Dave Lombardo songs without Dave Lombardo, and they should not play Paul Bostaph songs without Paul Bostaph 3) towards the end of his run with Slayer Jeff Hanneman's leads were beyond not good.
Now I know that its a bummer about Jeff Hanneman, but if you listen to any of their live stuff from say...2005 until Hanneman had to bow out, his lead playing was atrocious. I know that he had arthritis and various aliments that he didn't want out in the open, I know that Slayer has an unorthodox lead style, I know that he played whatever he wanted to, BUT the leads were bad. I like noisy solos as much as the next guitar guy. The stuff you can do with a whammy bar and some delay/reverb is amazing, but he wasn't even trying. This none more apparent then when you listen to say "Seasons In the Abyss" from The Big 4 box set (which is an awesomely awesome thing BTW). Now it's not just his leads that sucked balls in that show; Kerry King is very meh as well. But the solo(s) in that song are so good. SOOOO GOOD. And during that one he just wanks chromatically all over the place. It sounds like a kid with epilepsy at Guitar Center playing. Yikes.
My next point. Yes it sucks that Lombardo is out, again. But at least Bostaph is back in. If you watch the YouTube videos of them both playing you can tell the differences between their styles obviously and how they don't really fit into the others songs well at all. Example: watch Lombardo play something like "Dittohead". Great song, but the drumming is super tight and technical. Dave Lombardo is not tight at all. He has that great groove that makes the songs he plays on come alive. Plus he loves to do improv (which he is super good at), which does not lend its self to Bostaph songs. Second example: watch Bostaph play "War Ensemble". He is way stiff. But that's his style. Technical and precise. That's not to say that he lacks groove or anything, but he can't hold a candle to Lombardo. The parts in that song are looser, even the fast parts, and they give that song life. But when a robot plays them not so much. So again my solution: don't have Dave Lombardo play Paul Bostaph songs, and don't have Paul Bostaph play Dave Lombardo songs.
And, I really don't know how I feel about Gary Holt moving forward with these guys. Maybe it's because it's too soon since Hanneman, but it feels weird. And what does it do to Exodus? We'll see I guess.

Dumpy Apartment and the Crazy Stories It Has Given Me: Part II

Wow. Just wow. Until I moved into this place, if you had tried to tell me that a person like my landlord existed, I probably would not have believed you. Here are some of the dumb things that I have, been told or witnessed personally her doing.

* She stole one of my roommates bottles of laundry soap.
* She goes through our trash. Yes.
* I have rabbits so she wants their poop for her "garden". So when I take out my trash, like a rodent she rips the bag open getting rabbit shit everywhere.
* We have come into the house serval times to find her rooting around for no reason.
* She leaves rotten stinky food outside. Like out in the front yard outside.
* I saw her trying to steal a desk that was outside someones home. Not on the curb, but right in front of their house.
* She has no concept of keeping things to herself; like she talks to all three of us, about each other. Trying to stir shit up.
* Also she tries to charge us arbitrary amounts of money for things. Unaware that we know this shit hole is rent controlled.
* My personal favorite; she asked to borrow money from me.

So yeah. Hard to believe someone like that really exists huh?

Hey Murray!!!!

I'm sure like most guys out there, you use some sort of product in your hair. I've tried my fair share of stuff, just to see what I like or works best. Along the way I've encountered some pretty sweet products, but I've also encountered one of the worst/shittiest hair products ever:

MURRAY'S POMADE
(dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn)

Here was my thought process upon trying some of Murray's Pomade. The previous product I had purchased was through Walgreens and it was fucking awesome. Awesome, awesome, awesome. So, I decided that I would go back and get some again. Guess what? They didn't have it. So I tried 3 other Walgreens with no luck. I then went to the one closest to my house and looked at their selection. Not much to choose from that didn't look super shitty. I then looked at the prices. Now this alone should have been a dead give away on the type of product I was about to purchase.

$1.99

Now the reasonable person in me thought: "Hey; its $1.99 and it has more in it than any other product. This is a deal!" Wrong.

The first time I used it, I knew I had made a costly $1.99 mistake. This shit is tacky (literally) as hell. After somehow getting it in my hair I washed my hands seriously, 10 times and they were still tacky. My hair looked like I had been in a wind tunnel. The next morning when I went to wash my hair, yikes. I washed it probably 2-3 times and I could still feel the grit in it.

So, after 2 days of using Murray's Pomade, I threw in the towel. Fuck this shit. It's terrible. Worst $1.99 I've spent in a long time.

Dumpy Apartment and the Crazy Stories It Has Given Me

Well, since the last time I have written anything; some big changes have happened. Some personal problems have come up and as a result, I ended up moving to a new place. AND boy, is this place weird...

Here are some strange things that I have noticed/learned about my new place; partly from me observing and also from talking to my two other roommates (who feel and the think the same things about this place).

First off, there are three of us who live in this place. We each know the landlady by three different names and reach her through three different numbers. This lady is also a hoarder. There is shit crammed into every possible nook and cranny of this dump. In addition to that, she has three vehicles that are also filled with shit.
The landlady has a problem with one of my roommates, because he questions the dumb bullshit that she does. As a result of this, the landlady badmouthed this guy to me and our other roommate before we each moved in. As a result, we figured out she is full of shit and we actually like each other. Also to go with that, she never calls him by his name and if one of us mentions his name, she stares off like she has no idea who we are talking about.
Did I mention that there is a lot of shit in this place? Well there is. To go along with all the shit in this place, there are a shit ton of rats in the attic. Like if you are in the kitchen and it's quiet, you can here them scurrying around, having sex, or doing whatever it is that rats do. Due to the gross nature of this place, we all keep all of our personal belongings in our rooms. Not because of each other, but because it's gross and she has taken some things from past occupants "by accident".
That also reminds me. We all have locks on our doors. Again not because of each other, but from her. When I was going to move in, she offered me a choice of two locks. Two SHITTY locks. One was a combination lock and the other was a key lock; with a key so small you lose it just by looking at it. I told her I was going to buy a Master Lock. You've heard of Master Lock before right? Well, she is the only person in the world who hasn't. I showed her my lock and she was mystified. Oh yeah, there was an old lock on the door that I needed to get off. She said "How are you going to get that off?". I said "Well, don't you have a bolt cutter?". She then shot me a look that said; why would you ask something so fucking stupid? Well when I moved in, I had to get that lock off so how did I do it? I ripped it off with my bare hands. I told her how I did that and she told me it took four guys to put that lock on the door. That's right, four guys.

I will be in this dumpy shit hole of a dump until the end of June and I am very, very positive that this place is a gold mine for this blog. So stay tuned!

Don't Be That Guy

What's going on there people? In this enthralling edition of One Terrible Blog, I'm gonna discuss some muzak with you. What I am going to discuss is this; no one, anyone, should ever cover the following 3 rock artists: Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, & Pantera. Allow me to elaborate...

First off, all 3 were/are guitar players who cannot be matched. They have a unique voice and style and when others cover their material, it frankly sounds like dog shit. They can't match the vibe or the feel of the originals.

Examples:

Van Halen: EVH is without a doubt one of the most influential guitar players er....ever. The way that he plays off of his brother, Roth/Hager/Cherone, the man with 2 first names/his kid; is unmatched by others.

Pantera: That band just had a groove that cannot be matched or replicated. When ever you see some ass hat on Youtube doing a Pantera cover; it sounds like crap. Also a side note to that...why in the name of all that is good, would anyone, anywhere ever want to hear Zakk Wylde play with those guys? He doesn't have the style to do it. He's all fast stupid pentatonic runs and awful vibrato. Plus if you go onto Youtube you can see him "jamming" onstage with them at the end of Primal Concrete Sledge. One word: supergoddamnfudgingawful.

and lastly....

Hendrix: If you need to know why it should be outlawed covering a Hendrix tune, my only argument is this: search Youtube for Yngwie  J. Malmsteen doing a horrendously terrible version of Voodoo Child. That's it. That's my argument.

Anyways, never ever be the guy who covers anyone those bands unless your name is Edward Van Halen, Dimebag Darrell, or Jimi Hendrix.

Son Of A Bitch Jeans

I don't know if anyone who stumbles across this by total accident has the same problem as me; BUT I have a pair of jeans which fit great (and even a bit loose) and the son of a bitch bastard zipper comes undone when I walk. Holy balls is that annoying. If I walk maybe 45 feet the whole thing is undone. Free peep show for oncoming foot traffic.

I'm not sure which is more embarrassing: a) having to constantly rezip my pants like some sort of fool, b) forgetting about it and walking like that for blocks on end, or c) having to try and zip my pants up (non) discreetly, even though everyone probably knows what's up.

Anyways, damn jeans.

Naked Ghosts

Long time no see. Well I've been busy, but here goes nothing.

So I was in my Advanced Silkscreen class the other week, and in between technique demos, a buddy of mine posed a serious question:

Why do ghosts always have clothes on?

Good question. Why do ghosts have clothes on? I mean they are material items, right? So how would they last into the next dimension or life? In addition to that, why are the clothes always so dirty and crappy looking? But I guess that it's a better alternative to them being naked right? Well, in some cases that wouldn't be too bad to see a naked ghost but more often than not they are doing us a solid. And why are they always so decayed looking? They are ghosts not zombies.

Anyways so ponder that. Later taters.

A Different Kind of Circus

As it's January, and it's also that time of the year where musicians from all over the world get together in Los Angeles for the winter N.A.M.M. (National Association of Music Merchants) show; I figured that I would briefly run down the craziness that I was fortunate enough to experience in 2009 when I went. So this not really going to necessarily flow from thing to thing, it'll just be things I saw and experienced. Some will be short one liners, others a bit lengthier.

Without further a due, here we go!!!

*I went to this sweet ass Yamaha party and proceeded to get food poisoning from some bad queso while getting super drunk off of free beer. They next morning we were was supposed to attend an awards banquet for the company I worked for; it was an award for staying in business for 100 consecutive years. Needless to say, I didn't make it. And this was like the second day of the week and a half long trip.

*At the conference I was cut off by Dave Mustaine, twice. Literally. Like he walked right in front of me and I had to stop in my tracks or I would have run into him.

*From across the room, I saw Steve Vai marching across the hall. I say marching because that is one lanky bastard and he was leaving all of his assistants in the dust by about 20 steps.

*John Dolmayan, the drummer from System of a Down, was wondering around like a lost child.

*One day I was leaving and Tony Levin was walking in, looking like some sort of androgynous gunslinger. Parting the seas of people with his bass. And mustache.

*I went off exploring, which is super fun to do there, and saw Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater playing piano to exactly 3 people.

*While wondering around, I found the booth where Michael Anthony was signing at. I got his autograph by inadvertently cutting in front of about 200 people. Oops.

*Oh yeah, and I found a giant ass rave room. Fucking crazy.

*I found Mike Inez from Alice In Chains who was super cool and super drunk (it was like 11AM); talked to him and he signed some autographs for me. And managed to spell my name wrong, even though we were all wearing name tags.

*During one of the days, I found a booth/table where Alex Skolnick and Alexi Lahio were signing. Everyone seemed to be bypassing Skolnick to meet Lahio who was acting like a tool. I was way way more excited to meet Skolnick for the second time and during the whole conversation I had with him, Lahio looked borderline annoyed I wasn't excited to see him. Douche.

*There are like 3-4 levels at this convention. In the basement they have every shit knock off version of instruments that you could imagine by small companies from even smaller countries. It was on this floor that I saw Brooke White; who was on a season of American Idol. She looked so bummed that some sponsor stuck her in the basement.

*This was also the trip that launched the legendary What's That Smell? series I started to write.

*When I was in a meeting with some folks from Randall, I looked off to the side and saw Tommy Shaw from Styx. Styx hasn't been popular since 1983. Tommy Shaw hasn't been popular since 1991. Yet he had a fleet of people with him doing shit for him. And he is short.

*While I was there, I learned a few things. One is that when the famous/well known musicians are out and about, they like to just check shit out without being bugged. They do this by turning over their badges so you can't see their names. One guy I saw who did this was Cris Caffery, of TSO and Savatage fame. He could tell I knew who he was yet shot me a look with his eyes that said "Hey, don't fucking talk to me." And then he walked away.

Well, there you have it. Some weird/crazy/interesting shit that happened during my time there. As anyone who has been there can tell you, that is just the tip of the iceberg. There are lots of famous, big name musicians who are there, tons of half naked models, weirdos dressed up, and tons of musicians who were popular for like 3 months in the late 80s' and early 90s'. In short, it's a good god damn time. Tons of shows and some booths (Alfred) give away free beer. Party on Wayne.

What's That Smell: Part Seven: Baby Shit & Aviation Nerds

New Year, new entry in the fabled epic goddamn journey know as "What's That Smell?"

Here we go...

My journey started the day before the actual journey. I had to  book a slot on the Super Shuttle for super fucking early the next morning, and also for the first time in my aviation life; checking in to a flight online. I was a bit nervous about checking in online, because I had never done it and the damn website was only giving me a boarding pass for one of my two flights. So far, off to an uncertain start. The Super Shuttle thing went down easy and I also got like %15 off, which amounted to like $3.
However that night things got interesting. I didn't sleep well, partly because I stayed up late and was afraid that I would oversleep and miss my shuttle/flight. Another thing was that I for some reason had an extremely upset stomach. Every two hours I would wake up feeling like I was going to give birth out of my ass. Good times so far. When I actually woke up and took a shower I thought that it would be a better start. However two things happened. 1) The Super Shuttle guy was like 20 minutes late and 2) I felt like I had to take a massive shit but couldn't because I didn't know when this fucking guy would grace me with his presence. So I had to hold that bitch in ALL DAY.
I'm glad that I did check in online since the Super Shuttle guy was late. We got there with less than an hour to go before boarding and the line to get through security was hella long. I boarded the flight, got settled in next to my window seat and busted out a book I had been wanting to read for a while (Predator: Concrete Jungle; awesomeness). I ended up reading over 2/3's of it on the flight, but kept getting distracted because some ass hat was listening to one of the TED Talks from Sir Ken Robinson and laughing hysterically. Side note to this story....TED Talks are overrated, Ken Robinson is not funny, I don't know what Ken Robinson does for a living but he apparently thinks he is a god damn comedian. Seriously, every time I have heard/seen him speak, he seems to consciously script in laughter breaks. What a tool box. ANYWAYS...so this ass hat is laughing his stupid head off and I can hear him over me listening to Tommy by The Who.
Well, that flight lands and I have to run to the exact opposite end of the airport as usual. I find my terminal and chill out for a bit. Then about 20 minutes later we board and boy was I in for a doozy. Now if anyone has read any of the previous installments of What's That Smell?, you will have deduced that I am from Grand Forks; which is where I was headed. Grand Forks is home to the University of North Dakota. Among other things, UND has a world class aviation program and about 2.3 million fucking aviation nerds with it. About 100 of them ended up being on my flight. The whole way, and by the whole way, I mean the whole way; I had to listen to these losers backseat drive and criticize the pilot for the whole god damn flight. And on top of that, (here it comes) the plane had a weird smell (boom!). Why was that? Because a fucking crying baby (who also cried the whole way) was nice enough to take a shit, before take off. By the smell of it, he probably ate another baby's shit.

Well, that's that. Flying home in less than a week. More smelliness to follow!

It's Not the NFL Hall of Fame Damn It!!!!

It says PRO FOOTBALL, not NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE.
I'm sure that no one who stumbles across this might know, but I LOVE football. American football, that is, not Futball (I don't give two stinky damns about "the world's game"). But one thing I have some issues with are the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Some of the voting procedures are lame, the people who they do or don't let in are lame, the people who vote; but the main thing is how totally biased against anyone who didn't spend a majority of their career, or earn most of their success in the NFL.
This hall of fame is not called the NFL Hall of Fame, it is called the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If you do some quick research online, you can find out that there have been dozens of professional football leagues, both for men and women, yet only the NFL gets the recognition. I totally get why they don't accept CFL'ers in as much (only two are in: Bud Grant and Warren Moon); BUT when you stop and look at the numbers 6 out of the top 10 all time passing leaders in pro football history played exclusively or a majority of their careers in the CFL, yet only one guy (Warren Moon) is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. What. The. Hell?
Now everyone knows that Eric Dickerson ran for 2,105 yards in 1984, and that my man Adrian Peterson ran for 2,097 this season (2012); but how many people know or recognize that the all time single season rushing record holder is actually Herschel Walker from 1985 with 2,411 yards? Probably not as many as their should be. Or even for that fact that despite only two Pro Bowls in his NFL career, when you combine his total professional yardage, he amassed over 13,000 yards. How does that not merit a bust in Canton?
I guess if you move past just records and all of that, you could just look at dudes who for some reason have not been included because of personal grudges. That in my opinion is extremely lame. Charles Haley might have been a dick, rude, and maybe borderline mean to people; but you know what? That dude has FIVE Super Bowl rings! You know how many other guys have five Super Bowl rings? Zero. Until Brett Favre broke his record, Jim Marshall started the most consecutive games for a non-kicker and that dude has not been inducted. Tim Brown, Cris Carter, Jerry Kramer, Andre Reed, Kevin Greene, etc... The list goes on and on.
I get why they don't let some offensive players in because they feel that some records have been broken so often, BUT some of those guys played at high enough levels for long periods of time. High enough that they still earned All Pro honors and Pro Bowl selections.
So in the long run, is this going to change anything? No. How many people will read this? Five. Six tops. But I still wanted to get that off my chest. It bugs the shit out of me. Just like the MVP award. Seriously, why not just say you're going to give it to only offensive players. I mean, how did Jared Allen not win that award OR the Defensive Player of the Year award????
